Coding Primary Language in interRAI assessments

In an interRAI assessment in New Zealand, when English is not the person's first or preferred language, the general practice is to use interpreter or translation services to ensure accurate communication and understanding. Family members often act as the interpreter. This is especially important for assessments that inform care planning and wellbeing support. Refer to the interRAI Workbook units for more information. This item is B3. Primary language for LTCF and HC, and A9. Primary language for CA.

When updating the Overview Screen in the interRAI Assessment Software (iAS) for your client, you need to code the Primary language which then populates into the assessment.

How do you code Primary language when the person can speak two languages? Select the correct answer from the list below:

1. Code the language that the person prefers to use for day-to-day communication for example when they talk to their GP or other health professionals / support workers providing care.

2. Code Primary language as the language they speak at home with their family.
