Maintaining competency

How to maintain competency

To maintain competency and remain an approved interRAI assessor, you must:

  • maintain an annual practising certificate from your professional body
  • complete an interRAI assessment at least every six months - if you're competent in more than one assessment type, you must do this for each one
  • complete annual methodology exams in interRAI Learning and Development (iL&D)
  • meet the requirements of a quality review, if you are selected

If you don't maintain competency

If you don't maintain assessment competency, your Momentum access will be changed to read-only. You'll be able to view records but not complete assessments.

Methodology exams

Our learning system, iL&D, will send you a series of automated reminders before your exams are due. Once you pass, a certificate will be available in iL&D for you to download if you wish.

If you haven't passed on your second attempt, complete and save your third attempt (but don't submit it) and then email us. We'll arrange for an educator to review the exam and support you with your learning.

If you can't complete your exams in time, email us to arrange an extension. Your Momentum access will be changed to read-only if your exams are overdue and you don't have an extension.

For all exam queries, email interRAI@tas.health.nz

Quality review process

We use our Data Consistency Reports to identify assessors who might need extra help.

If you're selected, an interRAI educator will review one of your recent assessments, in a process called quality review. The educator will give feedback, check your exams are up to date, and offer extra support if needed.

Once you have achieved your assessment competency, it's a good idea to keep your skills up to date. You can do this by completing a skills booster course. See here for information about our scheduled skills booster courses or email us at interRAI@tas.health.nz for help arranging a skills booster.

If you haven't completed assessments for a while, the quality review process can also help you refresh your knowledge. If you haven't completed any assessments for 3 or more years, you must retrain.
